The date of Atatürk's first visit to Mersin is 17 March 1923. In this first trip of Atatürk to Southern Anatolia after the Great Victory, he accompanied his wife Latife Hanım, MP Kılıç Ali, Damar (Arıkoğlu), Refik (Koraltan), Chief Yaver Salih (Bozok), writer İsmail Habib (Sevük) and more. there were others. Atatürk came forward to Adana, after staying here for a few days, he moved to Mersin. The welcoming ceremony was very bright, Atatürk made a speech with the people of Mersin that day in the Nation's Garden. After having lunch at the Municipality, he went to Tarsus and stayed in Tarsus for two days. Atatürk rested for the second time in Mersin and Silifke for a week when he and Latife Hanım came to Mersin for the second time on 20 January 1925. While in Mersin, a mansion was reserved for him, This mansion was specially furnished for Atatürk. In those days, when Atatürk was in Mersin, he was hosted in this mansion, in the houses of Hacı Hulusi when he was in Silifke, and in the houses of Sadık (Taşucu) when he was in Tabucu. Atatürk also established Tekir Farm in the Tekirdağ village of Silifke on his arrival.

Although Atatürk came to Mersin 6 times after that, he often left Mersin without spending the night on the day he arrived. He mostly stayed at the Gazi Farm he founded in Tekir Village.

On May 20, 1938, which was his last visit to Mersin, after watching the parade of the military units, he was hosted in the Governor's Mansion, rested in Mersin until May 23, 1938, and toured around.

The Konak in Mersin, where Atatürk stayed for a while with his wife Latife Hanım on January 20, 1925, began to be used as a school (college) after Atatürk's death. Mansion located on Atatürk Street in Mersin today; It was built by the Tahinci family, one of the notables of Mersin, in 1897 as a two-storey building. During the Republican period, it was transferred to the Treasury and became the property of the state. The balcony room and other rooms on the upper floor in the direction of the front of the mansion were reserved for Atatürk. Atatürk's bedrooms and study rooms were arranged here.

The mansion, known as the Atatürk House, was expropriated by the Ministry of Culture and started to be repaired during the efforts to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Atatürk's birth. After the repair, it will be rearranged as Atatürk House and Ethnography Museum.
