Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion

History

Florya, a residential area on the shores of the Marmara Sea, between Yeşilköy and Küçükçekmece, is known to have been a dull hunter's haunt in the 19th century. Florya, which gained importance with Atatürk's interest in this place, gradually turned into a summer recreation center.

The Marine Mansion, which was started to be built in 1935 by the Istanbul Municipality with the suggestion of Doctor Neşet Ömer, thinking that it would be good for his illness in the last periods of Atatürk's life, was completed in a short period of 43 days.

In the project competition held for the construction of Florya Atatürk Marine Mansion, the project belonging to Master Architect Seyfi Arıkan came first. The main reason for Atatürk's choice was that the architect studied the building with a public beach.

The mansion, which was commissioned by the Istanbul Municipality to architect Seyfi Arkan in 1935 for Atatürk, was built as a summer residence on columns driven into the seabed and connected to the land by a bridge. The great Leader lived in the mansion, which was opened for use on 14 August 1935, in June and July 1936, and used the mansion especially for political and scientific meetings.

The mansion was last used by Atatürk on 28 May 1938, and after his death, these buildings were used as the summer residence of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey during the periods of İsmet İnönü, Celal Bayar, Cemal Gürsel, Cevdet Sunay, Fahri Korutürk and Kenan Evren.

Architecture and interior

Atatürk Marine Mansion has a single storey and is located on large piles. It is an L-shaped wooden building made with specially designed materials and fittings. It was created taking into account the special care that Atatürk needed in the last years of his life. Since Deniz Köşk is right next to the Florya public beach, Atatürk stayed close to the public and went into the sea with the people. Due to the restoration works carried out today, the Mansion has undergone a large-scale renovation and some of it has been changed to reinforced concrete.

Atatürk Marine Mansion is 70 meters from the shore, connected to the shore by a bridge and on stilts. Florya Deniz Mansion has a large living room, library, resting and bedrooms, and a bathroom. In the very plain and modest mansion, right next to Ata's room, in the room of his adopted daughter Ülkü, there is a bed and a ship model with the words “Ülkü” on a coffee table.

Also in Florya, a grove was created by the order of Atatürk in the wide area where the ruins of the old Ayastafonos Monastery are located, and a grove decorated with pines was named Atatürk Grove. Florya Garden is also arranged as a public park.

The mansion, which was commissioned by the Istanbul Municipality to architect Seyfi Arkan in 1935 for Atatürk, was built as a summer residence on columns driven into the seabed and connected to the land by a bridge. The great Leader lived in the mansion, which was put into use on 14 August 1935, for a long time in June and July 1936, and used the mansion especially for political and scientific meetings, among them the English King VIII. It hosted some important guests, including Edward and Madam Simpson.

Transferred to the National Palaces Department of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey by the Presidency on September 16, 1988, this group of buildings was transformed into the Atatürk Museum after its restoration was completed with period furniture to match the style of the mansion, which was built with a modern understanding in the period. A permanent photography exhibition on the theme of Some of the Auxiliary and General Secretariat buildings, which were built on the land behind the Atatürk mansion, have not survived, and the rest have been repaired and turned into the social facilities of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. A structure providing cafeteria and restaurant services was added to the space between these buildings.
