Mustafa Kemal Wears Coat
Mustafa Kemal participates in the exercise held in Picardie, France, between 12-18 September 1910, with a delegation on behalf of the Ottoman Army.
Mustafa Kemal describes how he was funny about the clothes he wore in Paris:
-“When I was a young officer, before the First World War, we were invited to watch the 'Picardi' maneuvers to be held in France on behalf of the Ottoman army. We were two friends. Eager to dress like a European, we stopped by the Trink store in Galata and bought a coat of tuxedos and other civilian clothes and a bowler hat. As our train approached Paris, we were dressed in these European clothes in our compartment. Tuxedos on our backs, sparkling patent leather shoes on our feet, and bowler hats that go all the way down to our eyebrows with the effect of being used to wearing a fez on our heads.”
While Atatürk was describing this funny situation, the people at the table were telling that he made fun of himself as follows:
-“He used to laugh out loud too.” Atatürk continued to describe those days as follows:
-“The way we were, Fethi (Okyar) Bey, who was an attaché in France at that time, greeted us at the garda. He looks at us and snickered, and said:
-'What the hell is this?' She was saying. We are seriously:
"We came to Paris in civil clothes," we replied. Fethi Bey did not extend:
- 'Let's go to a hotel immediately and undress immediately... If they see you here like that, they'll find it ridiculous. "This is not a travel outfit," he said.
That night, it was decided that the official dress of the Republic of Turkey would be a frock coat.”
